Chapter 6: Hollywood Girls
Chapter 6: Hollywood Girls
The 6 subway line runs west from the Central Penitentiary towards Hollywood, and Ethan Lee gets off near MacArthur Park.
The community surrounding MacArthur Park is one of the poorer areas in Hollywood and even the city. 60 percent of the residents are Hispanic, 30 percent are Black, and 10 percent are other races, including low-income immigrants from various countries.
Lee Ethan returned to his rented, dilapidated apartment. Although the six-story building was 50 years old, it provided a safe haven for people with little money.
For example, Ethan Lee is like this, burdened with $7 in college loans. His parents died in a fire when he was in high school, and their farm was also destroyed. The insurance payout was used to pay off his parents' debts, which is why he has a debt higher than the average of $4.4.
(America's chances of receiving disaster insurance compensation are only 50%, and she may not even receive compensation because she did not purchase specific supplementary insurance, such as for livestock sheds.)
He has worked hard for a year and saved every penny to pay back one-third of his debt; otherwise, he wouldn't have money for food.
The door opened, and Li Yisen greeted the cleaning lady in the lobby on the first floor. She was the owner of the apartment, his landlord.
Good evening, Ms. Angie.
The kind-looking middle-aged woman also smiled.
Good evening, Ethan.
To be honest, Ethan Lee was able to live here a year ago because Ms. Angie offered him a cheaper rent. Her reason was that there were many women in the apartment, and having a policeman as a neighbor would be nice, at least it would be safer and attract more tenants.
Angie Apartments, due to its proximity to Hollywood and affordable rent, is a preferred accommodation for many men and women who come to Hollywood to pursue their careers.
Ms. Angie felt that managing women was less troublesome, and 8% of the apartment was occupied by young women, many of whom were beautiful, hot young women who dreamed of a Hollywood dream.
As soon as he finished speaking, a hot, black-haired woman came back and greeted the young policeman sweetly.
"Ethan, good evening."
Good evening, Lisa, you played your role very well.
"No, he's just a minor supporting character in a TV series."
The black-haired woman took the old elevator upstairs, and Angie sidled up next to Ethan Lee to chat.
"Have you heard? Nicole Watts from across the hall got the lead role."
Lee Esen was drawn to the topic.
What movies does she act in?
"It seems to be a low-budget art film. The director is a fairly famous female director who has won awards. I forgot her name."
"I rarely watch movies, so I don't know, and I'm not familiar with Ms. Watts."
Angie rolled her eyes at the young man. They all lived near Hollywood, yet they didn't recognize these movie stars.
"Ethan, you really missed a golden opportunity. If you had acted sooner, you might have a future superstar girlfriend."
"Yes, yes, I missed a great opportunity."
After chatting for a while, Li Yisen and the landlord went back to their rooms to watch the news. Sure enough, they saw news about the Central Prison, and his name appeared once, not as a compliment, but to mention that he had killed a prisoner.
"This news report seems like it's trying to stir up trouble."
Lee Ethan knew that the Black Lives Matter protests had been escalating in recent days, and he was genuinely worried that those lunatics would spread their influence to his area. Fortunately, the deceased was Latino, not Black.
The next second, Li Yisen had an M18 pistol in his hand. He took it out of his system inventory and, after checking, found that the trigger was modified and that it contained 21 bullets.
"Not registering means no fear of illegal possession of firearms, it's really convenient."
Lee Ethan took out a pistol and hid it in his backpack, having a great time.
Suddenly, a message came through on his phone. Li Yisen picked it up, put on his slippers, went out, opened the door across the street, and went inside.
The tidy room was filled with the aroma of meat, and a beautiful figure could be seen preparing a steak.
With her shoulder-length blonde hair contrasting sharply with her porcelain-white skin, she is remarkably tall at nearly 1.8 meters, possessing an overall S-shaped figure with a slender waist and hips forming a perfect silhouette. She is a beautiful blonde woman.
Li Yisen hugged the woman who had just gotten the lead role from behind, and could feel the delicate fabric even through her clothes.
"You got the lead role but didn't tell me. Nicole, this makes me really sad."
The woman turned her head, revealing a pretty face with well-defined features yet a touch of softness; her delicate features could be described as alluring.
"I wasn't sure either, that's why I didn't say."
"Anyway, congratulations! You've finally achieved your goal."
"Congratulations on your successful release from prison."
Li Yisen smelled the familiar scent, and just as he was about to make a bold move, he was driven away by the other party.
"Come on, come on, I'm making dinner."
"How stingy!"
Is this petty?
Li Yisen sat down at the dinner table and looked at the busy figure, feeling a little emotional and a bit regretful.
It's a pity that I still remember Nicole Watts working in a supermarket a year ago. At that time, she was a college graduate who had just come to Hollywood from Australia to pursue her dreams, and she could only play some minor roles in Hollywood.
To make a living, I have to work two part-time jobs, which has made my hands quite rough.
The two met when Li Yisen helped drive away two thugs. They talked and discovered they lived across the street from each other, so they gradually became familiar with each other, and that's how they got to where they are now.
More than friends, but not quite lovers, they are just friends who comfort each other.
Both of them were strangers in a foreign land, so it was easy for them to find common ground.
As for one regret, it's that neither of them took the initiative to break down the final wall and become a real couple. Nicole Watts is an ambitious woman, and having a prison guard boyfriend wouldn't help her future acting career at all. Ethan Lee also had many reasons.
Nicole Watts placed the dinner on the table, and as she bent over, her fair skin, as white as jade, was revealed beneath her collar.
Why are you staring at me like that?
I think you look beautiful today.
"Thanks."
Li Yisen was not lying about this. The woman, who was a year older than him, had gone from being a little naive when they first met to being completely mature and could be described as alluring and charming.
I guess it's this kind of temperament that made her the female lead?
The two ate and chatted, mostly talking about their experiences in Hollywood, with Lee Ethan avoiding mentioning the bloody things that happened in prison.
A moment later, just as Li Yisen finished washing the dishes, he saw a beautiful figure wearing stockings walk out, her buttocks sitting on the sofa creating a composition that men could not look away from.
As Lee Yisen sat on the sofa watching TV, the blond man's head was already resting on his shoulder.
"I'm moving out tomorrow so I can act better."
"You'll become a big star."
"Don't you think there's something you should do?"
"Friends is pretty good."
Nicole Watts rolled her eyes at him, grabbed the man's hand, and reached down.
"Is I more attractive than anyone on TV?"
......
Three hours later, Ethan left Nicole's house and went for a night run in MacArthur Park. He ran a full 10 kilometers and still felt quite relaxed. It seems that the effects of the Power Heart program were better than expected.
Just as he was about to head to his usual supermarket, he witnessed an unexpected scene at the dimly lit supermarket entrance.
A young Chinese woman pinned down a Black woman and they began to fight, while a Chinese man stood nearby.
The two Chinese men, Li Yisen, recognized the supermarket owner and his daughter.
Although America has 550 million Chinese, California has nearly 270 million Chinese, and the area around Los Angeles has as many as 70 Chinese, there are fewer than 1000 Chinese within the MacArthur Park area, so it is not surprising that they know each other.
Moreover, strictly speaking, the two were from the same hometown as their predecessors. Li Yisen's grandfather came from the Wuyi region, which the older generation called the Siyi region, and further subdivided into the small city known as the hometown of volleyball. Therefore, Li Yisen is a third-generation immigrant descendant.
Most of the "Golden Mountain Uncles" mentioned in Hong Kong movies come from this small city. As for why they are called "Golden Mountain Uncles",
That's because after the Chinese Exclusion Act was repealed in the 40s, California experienced its third wave of immigration, with Chinese immigrants from small cities accounting for 25 percent of America's total Chinese immigrant population. These immigrants returned to China to find wives, which was called "Golden Mountain Uncles Looking for Wives".
Even now, there are 12 immigrants from small cities in America and 7 in California. They still have a lot of ethnic sentiments and hold meetings in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Ethan Lee went there a few times with his father when he was a child.
The older generation always says that when you're far from home, you should stick together and support each other.
Ethan frowned as he approached the shop owner, Chen Shuren. Didn't this family know it was a sensitive time? How dare they cause trouble for Black people?
"Old Chen, what's going on?"
Upon seeing that it was Li Yisen, Chen Shuren immediately began to explain. In his view, although the young man in front of him was of mixed race, he was still half "one of us," not to mention that he was a police officer and lived in the same community.
"This drug-addicted black woman stole my phone and dared to wander around the supermarket. My daughter spotted her and chased after her to catch her. Don't worry, I've already called the police. If I wasn't afraid she would sue me for sexual harassment, I would have fought back too."
Li Yisen frowned upon hearing this. He was unaware that the Chen Shuren family were new immigrants, and that American law differed greatly from that of Eastern countries.
"Did your daughter start it? Is there CCTV footage of the Black woman stealing?"
"The security camera caught it yesterday. They stole an iPhone, and it wasn't cheap."
Upon hearing this, Li Yisen's expression changed slightly. The theft yesterday?
He had already heard faint police sirens in the distance, and without time to say much, he could only hurriedly lean close to Chen Shuren's ear and whisper something.
"Go back immediately and delete today's surveillance footage, keep yesterday's. If the police ask, say the surveillance cameras were broken today. Don't ask why. Quickly, and don't tell anyone I told you."
"what?"
"Go quickly."
"oh oh."
Ignoring Chen Shuren's actions, Li Yisen directly lifted up the fighting Chen Xiulian, which greatly surprised her.
"Ethan, what are you doing?"
"Don't ask, the police are here."
"oh."
Upon hearing that the police had arrived, both women became quiet.
A police car arrived quickly, and two officers got out with their body cameras on.
Chen Xiulian and the Black woman filed complaints after seeing this.
"Officer, this woman stole my father's phone."
"Officer, this woman assaulted and injured me, and restricted my freedom. Arrest her and put her in jail immediately."
The black man's description clearly startled Chen Xiulian. Why should a thief be catching another thief? I'm catching a thief.
Lee Ethan, who was standing to the side, finally realized one thing: this drug-addicted Black woman knew more about American law than the Chen family, who were new immigrants.
If the police see Chen Xiulian beating a black man, even if the theft happened yesterday or was just discovered, Chen Xiulian could very likely spend about six months in prison.
Theft and assault or unlawful detention are two different things; the former is a minor offense, while the latter is a serious offense. You can accompany the offender to call the police, but you cannot take action yourself.
Lee Ethan didn't want to have any conflicts with Black people during this time, but he also didn't want to see Old Chen's family suffer. He could only try his best to help without breaking the law, hoping it would be helpful.
"Officer, I just saw two people fighting. It looked like the black man was on top of Jolin Chen, or it looked like Jolin Chen was on top of the other man."
"I'm clearly a veteran police officer," he asked.
"What's your name? What's your security number (ID card number)?"
"My name is Ethan Lee, a county sheriff at the Men's Central Jail."
When the two police officers heard that they were "colleagues", they were less hostile. Although they were from different police agencies, they could still be considered colleagues, and there might be a possibility of cooperation in the future.
