Chapter 307 A World for Two
Chapter 307 A World for Two
November 6, 1998, 8:00 AM.
Ling Yun opened his eyes.
He lay there for a few seconds, staring at the light on the ceiling.
There was a soft breathing sound beside him. An Shiyu was still asleep, lying on her side with her face buried in the crook of his shoulder. Her hair was spread out on the pillow, dark and loose, with a few strands falling onto his arm, tickling him.
He moved his arm, and An Shiyu opened her eyes, looked up at him, and asked somewhat groggily, "What time is it?"
"have no idea."
She propped herself up and glanced at the alarm clock on the bedside table; it was already 8:40.
"It's so late," she muttered, lying back down. "Why didn't you wake me?"
"Why did I call you?"
"Cooking."
I'm not hungry.
An Shiyu smiled, buried her face in his chest, and said in a muffled voice, "You have to eat even if you're not hungry."
The two lingered for a while longer until around nine o'clock, when An Shiyu finally got up.
She was wearing a Lingyun T-shirt that reached her thighs, and she walked barefoot to the kitchen, her feet clattering on the floor. Soon, the sound of a running tap, the clanging of pots and pans, and then the sizzling of frying eggs came from the kitchen.
Ling Yun lay on the bed, listening to those sounds.
He recalled the past twenty-odd days they had spent in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Wuhan. An Shiyu found everything fascinating, enjoyed every meal, and always smiled when taking photos. Sometimes, while he discussed serious matters, she would wander around the neighborhood, and when he returned, she would tell him about the interesting things she had seen.
I visited four cities in just over twenty days.
But at this moment, all he wanted to do was lie here and listen to the sound of her frying eggs.
"Dinner's ready!" An Shiyu called from the kitchen.
Lingyun sat up, put on her slippers, and strolled to the kitchen.
On the table were two plates of fried eggs, two glasses of milk, and a few slices of bread. An Shiyu sat opposite her and had already started eating. She ate quickly but attentively, taking small bites at a time.
Lingyun sat down and picked up a fork.
"What are we doing today?" An Shiyu asked.
"have no idea."
"Want to go for a walk?"
"it is good."
After breakfast, An Shiyu went to wash the dishes. Ling Yun stood on the balcony, looking outside. In the neighborhood, some people were walking their dogs, some elderly people were playing chess, and several children were chasing and playing. The sun was very strong, making it difficult to open one's eyes.
After washing the dishes, An Shiyu walked over and stood next to him.
"What are you thinking about?"
"I wasn't thinking about anything, I just felt like I didn't want to go to work, so I wanted to spend some time with you."
She rested her head on his shoulder and looked outside.
"I wish we could do this every day from now on," she said.
Around nine o'clock, the phone rang.
Lingyun glanced at the caller ID—an unknown number, but the area code was Hong Kong.
He answered the call.
"Ling Yun?" It was Li Ziyu's voice on the other end.
"it's me."
"Did I disturb you?"
"Nothing." Ling Yun walked onto the balcony. "What is it?"
"The Hang Seng Index in Hong Kong has fallen below 7500," Li Ziyu said excitedly. "Didn't you tell me to keep an eye on it? It just broke through today."
"And another thing," Li Ziyu continued, "that third of the Cisco stock you told me to sell last time, I've cleared it all out. The cost was 52, so I sold 96, making a profit of over four million. Now I have almost twenty million US dollars in the account, all waiting."
"So what's the next step? Should we invest in Hong Kong stocks or continue waiting?" Li Ziyu spoke like a machine gun, not giving Ling Yun a chance to interrupt.
Ling Yun turned around and saw An Shiyu still sitting on the sofa through the glass door of the balcony, the television light flickering. She wasn't looking at him, but her back was tense.
"Leave it for now, no rush," Ling Yun said. "I'll call you tomorrow."
"Okay." Li Ziyu paused for a moment, "Are you alright over there? If you're not busy, come to Hong Kong and take advantage of the current low property prices to buy a couple of luxury homes. Such good opportunities are rare."
"I'm free lately. I'll be going to Hong Kong in a couple of days. If there's anything I need to do, we can talk when we meet."
After hanging up the phone, Lingyun stood on the balcony for a while longer. A night breeze blew by, making it a bit chilly.
He went back inside. An Shiyu was still staring at the TV, but the program had been changed to GG.
"Who is it?" she asked.
"Li Ziyu".
"What is it?"
"It's about the Hong Kong stock market." Ling Yun sat down next to her. "I need to go take a look."
"When are you leaving? You've been resting for a long time. Are you going to Hong Kong?" she asked.
"Leaving tomorrow, flying directly to Hong Kong."
"Then go to bed early." An Shiyu picked up the remote and turned off the TV.
She stood up and walked towards the bedroom. After a few steps, she stopped.
What time are you leaving tomorrow?
"It's not decided yet."
"I'll take you there."
"Need not."
She didn't say anything and went into the bedroom.
Ling Yun heard rustling sounds coming from the bedroom; it was An Shiyu making the bed.
After a while, the sound stopped.
He stood up and walked to the bedroom door. An Shiyu was already lying down, her back to the door.
Ling Yun stood at the door for a few seconds, then went in, lay down, wrapped his arms around An Shiyu's neck, held her head to his chest, and whispered, "I'm a little reluctant to leave you, and I don't want to go to work."
An Shiyu snuggled closer to Ling Yun, finding a more comfortable position, and whispered, "I also hate to see you go."
Ling Yun asked, "You haven't been to Hong Kong before, have you? Why don't you come with me? I can show you around. Hong Kong has returned to China; you should definitely go see it."
"Then my job..." An Shiyu was somewhat tempted.
"Work is for earning money to enjoy life. You can leave the money to your husband and just enjoy life." Lingyun hoped that An Shiyu could quit her job at the library, but she didn't want to bring it up directly, so she could only tempt and encourage her.
"I'll talk to my parents about it tomorrow. I originally thought that working at the library would be a relaxed job where I could read books, do research, and write articles to publish. But now the work is a lot and very tedious, which is not what I expected at all," An Shiyu complained, after all, there was a big gap between her ideal and reality.
"I have a great idea. I'll develop a website for you, specifically for publishing articles and novels. You can write and publish whatever you want, or you can be an editor and post what you like on the website. This job is flexible, meaningful, and not boring at all," Ling Yun suggested.
"Won't that cost a lot of money?" An Shiyu still hadn't gotten used to the fact that her husband was someone who didn't care about money.
"It won't cost much, and your husband isn't short of money. Besides, if you do it well, you can earn money and gain fame at the same time." Ling Yun pinched An Shiyu's nose.
"Hmm..." An Shiyu slapped Ling Yun's hand away in dissatisfaction.
An Shiyu was very happy, dreaming of becoming a writer who could write freely, when suddenly a mischievous hand reached up from the hem of her T-shirt.
An Shiyu couldn't help but groan. To Ling Yun, this sound was the horn of attack. Receiving the signal, Ling Yun immediately mounted his horse.
An Shiyu cursed inwardly that Ling Yun was like an animal, never having a moment's rest. It had been a month since they got their marriage certificate, and apart from her period, Ling Yun hadn't given her a single day off.
The nickname "Wild Donkey" was very fitting for Ling Yun, and An Shiyu blushed secretly.
Ling Yun had no idea what An Shiyu was thinking, nor was he interested in figuring it out. At that moment, Ling Yun only wanted to merge An Shiyu into his own body; that feeling made him lose himself.
