He Wouldn't Claim Me — Another Man Did

Chapter 176 - 162: Birthday

Chapter 176 - 162: Birthday

Instantly, Luna Langley felt as if a piece of her heart had broken off.

"Then what about me?" she asked, looking at her mother. "If you leave with them, what will I do? Maybe I should just jump with you. That way, we can finally satisfy those wicked people who want our whole family dead. How does that sound?"

As Luna Langley spoke, she walked to the railing and made as if to climb it.

"Luna!" Serena Carter grabbed her daughter’s hand. "Don’t do this. You’re still so young."

"My family is gone. Being young just means I’ll have to endure the loneliness by myself for longer." Luna Langley gripped her mother’s hand, holding it tight. "Mom, look at me. Do you really have the heart to leave me all alone in this world?"

Looking at her daughter, tears streamed down Serena Carter’s face.

Luna Langley hugged her mother from behind. The moment her mother’s guard was down, she yanked her away from the railing.

Staff from the sanatorium and Silas Lockwood rushed over to help. The staff restrained Serena Carter while Silas held Luna Langley steady.

Luna Langley appeared calm, but she was trembling all over.

Without a word, Silas Lockwood pulled her tighter into his arms.

After the chaos subsided, Serena Carter was taken back to her room.

"I’m going to check on her," Luna Langley said to Silas Lockwood.

"Should I go in with you?"

Come to think of it, Silas Lockwood had yet to be formally introduced to his mother-in-law.

"That’s alright. She’s not in the right state of mind today. I’ll introduce you formally some other time."

"Okay. I’ll wait for you out here."

Luna Langley went into Serena Carter’s room. A moment later, the sound of broken sobs drifted out.

It was Serena Carter’s voice.

It was a sound of suppressed agony, enough to wrench anyone’s heart.

Silas Lockwood was worried about Luna Langley, but thankfully, when she emerged from the room, there were no tear tracks on her face, only a hint of exhaustion.

"How is she?" Silas Lockwood asked.

"Not good," Luna Langley replied, her voice laced with worry. "I feel like she’s lost the will to live. She could try to take her own life again at any moment."

"Because of the car accident three years ago?"

Luna Langley nodded.

Three years ago, the SUV carrying Luna Langley’s father collided with a truck on an overpass. Her father died at the scene. He wasn’t the only one in the vehicle; Luna’s twin brother was with him.

Luna’s brother had been a gifted young man with a remarkable talent for management. Her father had poured everything into grooming him as the successor, only for him to die so tragically in that crash, right in the prime of his life.

Having lost both her husband and her son in a single day, Serena Carter completely broke down.

From that day on, her mental state was never the same.

Undeniably, Serena Carter’s fate was tragic. But in truth, Luna Langley was just as pitiful. She had also lost two family members in a single day—no, counting her mother who was lost to grief, she had actually lost three.

After her father and brother died, Luna Langley was forced to step up. She gave up her beloved design studies to take over The Langley Group. She had to fend off her vulturous uncle, who was plotting to seize control, while simultaneously navigating difficult partners and clients who deliberately gave her a hard time. She couldn’t let her guard down for even a second.

"Tomorrow is the anniversary of my father and brother’s deaths." Luna Langley’s expression was lonely as she gazed at the moonlit sky. "For the past three years, my mother has tried to kill herself around this time. She’s probably forgotten that... today is also my birthday."

She and her brother shared a birthday. After he died, it felt as if Luna had lost the right to celebrate hers as well.

It wasn’t that she cared about celebrating her birthday. What she cared about was the feeling that, in her mother’s empty heart, there was no longer a place for her.

"Since it’s your birthday, let me celebrate it with you," Silas Lockwood said.
