Chapter 1309 - 669: Mo Han & Wanwan Arc – Just an Eyesore to Look At
After Ning Wan finished washing up, the aunt helped her downstairs. As soon as she stepped into the dining room, she saw a man sitting and reading the newspaper while checking the time on his watch.
The man seemed a bit impatient, with a slightly disgruntled look on his handsome face, and his brows furrowed tightly.
For some reason, the first thing that came to Ning Wan’s mind upon seeing Xi Mohan was the memory of him holding her as she slept. She couldn’t tell if it was a dream or reality.
The aunt guided Ning Wan to the dining room and respectfully spoke to Xi Mohan, "Sir, Miss Ning is here. Should breakfast be served now?"
Xi Mohan lifted his eyes from the newspaper and glanced at Ning Wan. His face remained expressionless, but there was a hint of a meaningful look in his eyes as he gazed at the girl’s face.
Without moving his lips, Xi Mohan let out a low hum from deep in his throat, then lowered his head to continue reading the newspaper.
The aunt seated Ning Wan opposite Xi Mohan, then went into the kitchen to instruct the servants to bring out breakfast.
After sitting down, Ning Wan’s gaze fell on the newspaper in the man’s hand, noticing the bold words ’Financial News.’ She slightly pursed her lips but said nothing.
The two of them remained silent. In reality, Ning Wan wanted to ask about her parents’ accident, especially since last night Xi Mohan told her they didn’t die accidentally, but rather someone orchestrated it. Now, sitting in front of him and seeing how absorbed he was in the newspaper, she lost all desire to speak, unsure of how to break the silence.
The aunt soon had the servants bring breakfast to them and then left the room.
Xi Mohan put the newspaper aside, lifted his eyes to the expectant gaze of Ning Wan, and said calmly, "Eat breakfast first. Afterward, I’ll tell you what I know so far about the truth, and then I’ll take you back to the Ning Family."
Ning Wan was initially stunned by these words, but quickly nodded, picked up her chopsticks, and started eating without uttering a single word.
Her quiet demeanor was unfamiliar to the man, making him feel uneasy and somewhat irritable.
At some point, he noticed a change in Ning Wan; she’d become quieter, losing the liveliness she once had. He wasn’t sure if it started when her parents passed away yesterday evening or even earlier.
Xi Mohan didn’t start eating right away. He looked at Ning Wan and spoke again, "Aren’t you going to ask anything?"
Ning Wan, "..." Her motion with the porridge paused, unsure of his meaning, but she quickly caught on, promptly putting down the spoon and sitting upright to look at him.
After swallowing the porridge, she hesitantly asked, "You... you promised to tell me the truth about my parents’ accident last night... Can you tell me now?"
Eager to know the truth, she couldn’t care less about her attitude, only that she didn’t upset Xi Mohan.
She didn’t want to act recklessly as she used to. Those who could protect her in this world were gone.
Seeing her cautious demeanor, the man seemed slightly displeased. Putting down his chopsticks, he let out a cold chuckle and said, "Ning Wan, has anyone ever told you that you look pretty annoying like this?"
His words made Ning Wan’s face freeze, initially not comprehending, but upon meeting his gaze and seeing the disdain in his eyes, she couldn’t help clenching her fists, her heart aching slightly.
Looking down at the bowl before her, Ning Wan closed and reopened her eyes, then once again gazed at Xi Mohan opposite her, speaking calmly, "No matter how I am, you wouldn’t like me, right?"
At her words, Xi Mohan’s mouth curved slightly, letting out a cold laugh, "I indeed don’t like you, but this is the first time you’ve truly annoyed me."
Ning Wan’s submissive and cautious demeanor grated on him.
He found himself questioning what it was he supposedly liked about her all along.
His face darkened further, lips pressed tightly as he looked at her small face with increasing disdain.
Ning Wan’s face turned pale, and she lowered her head, saying nothing.
Seeing her reaction, Xi Mohan’s face clouded, but he didn’t do anything further, only issuing a cold command, "Eat."
Ning Wan glanced up at him, hesitated for a dozen or so seconds, then asked, "Then... are you still going to tell me the truth about my parents’ accident?"
Xi Mohan took a sip of his coffee, then looked at her and said, "If you continue being this submissive, I don’t have the desire to tell you anything."
Finishing his words, he directed his attention back to his own breakfast.
Ning Wan’s eyes widened, seeing he had no intention of acknowledging her further, felt a bit lost.
She didn’t want to be this way either since it wasn’t truly herself, but her parents’ sudden death left her without support, feeling she had no more room for willfulness, prompting her to change.
Especially in front of Xi Mohan, she dared not act as she used to.
But his words left her feeling puzzled.
What should she do to do it right?
To not be so loathsome?
Staring blankly at her breakfast, she remained motionless.
— Because I’ve been having a cold and fever, looking at the screen makes my eyes hurt a lot. I’ll catch up on the updates I owe in a couple of days, post another Chapter at night.
