Chapter 140: Northern Frontier Tough Guy
Chapter 140: Northern Frontier Tough Guy
Here’s a joke: the stare from Purge Squad members. They say tell a good joke, get a bellyful of bullets. From the moment Lady Maria whimsically named her squad, it was clear what she expected from them.
The Purge’s first operation.
In Maria and Phoenix’s plan, it precisely targeted the Church of Steam Armory outpost on Bokashu Avenue. The reason was simple. Maria refused to waste her time and the squad’s limited strength. The Machine God Deacon at this outpost was also someone she knew.
The squad’s base and supply channels were still processed through City Hall to the Church of Steam.
“It’s the Purge!”
Black shortswords moved like vipers in close quarters, deftly eliminating the White Priest. Meanwhile, other squad members tore off their disguises. Within five steps, they subdued or cleanly dispatched the organizers or Transcendents.
“Purge the heretics!”
Many of those subdued or killed wore looks of disbelief. They never imagined fellow Sun Priesthood members, who should have been allies, would do this. Because of that, many on the attacked side were completely unprepared.
In the chaos, comrades approaching within a few steps was perfectly normal.
“You traitors! The gods will rip out your souls and burn them in the sun for eternity!” A priest glared viciously at the Purge Squad members. Betrayed and humiliated, he wished he could devour these traitors alive.
“Traitors? You who walk the path of self-destruction are the false believers leading the church to ruin.” Adam half-opened his eyes, sidestepped the priest’s staff swing, then cleanly shattered the priest’s fragile throat with his own staff. One strike, one kill.
The priest fell to the ground, eyes wide open, clutching Adam’s shoe with his last strength as if trying to speak.
But from his shattered throat, only blood clots and angry, meaningless sounds emerged.
Adam then expressionlessly kicked away the dead priest’s hand. Though both held divine office in the Radiant Church, their interpretations of doctrine differed. Since neither could convince the other, they followed the broken church’s old rule: only the survivors get to explain doctrine and the gods’ will.
This sudden turn stunned the believers storming the Church of Steam Armory.
While they were still charging into holy war under their clergy’s orders, in the blink of an eye, those clergy were all taken down by another group of unfamiliar clergy!
What now?
Raise weapons against clergy? Well, if you thought you lived too long, you could try. These weren’t Transcendents you could overwhelm with numbers. There were nearly ten of them, and each had just shown the riotous believers through ruthless, decisive strikes that they would truly kill. Their ferocity sent a chill straight from the soles up the spine to the brain.
"Don't be intimidated by the fallen divine offic-..." a hot-blooded young man suddenly shouted.
BANG!!
Before his words faded, the distinct roar of a gunpowder musket, unlike the sound of flame essence ignition, overwhelmed everything. Holding her handgun with tendrils of smoke still curling from the barrel, Maria tilted her head and coldly scanned the fool who dared speak out. If he uttered another improper word, the next shuttle would gently lift his skull right off.
Within ten meters, Maria had full confidence in hitting whatever she aimed at.
Courage and fervor quickly crumbled before the organized Transcendents and their uncompromising stance, like a sandcastle standing on the beach, gone after one wave recedes. Though unwilling, the fanatical believers dispersed, many of them carefully observing the Purge members stained with varying amounts of blood.
Maria spun her sword in a flourish, shaking off the blood before sheathing it smoothly. Her gaze followed the messy, filthy ground toward the Armory outpost where several bodies lay piled.
Her plan was halfway to success.
-
"They retreated, they're falling back..."
Inside the outpost, members of the Church of Steam leaned against their defenses, watching the retreating believers with lingering fear. The ground was smeared with blood and filth, a few neglected corpses tossed aside like broken toys.
Facing the relentless charge of fanatics who fought without regard for their lives, their fierce expressions eager to tear you apart, anyone would feel a chill.
Even some of their deacons who had never faced direct combat were trembling on their feet.
Fortunately, the Church of Steam members had wisely used ranged attacks instead of close-quarters weapons against the fanatics. Otherwise, their fragile defenses might have broken in the first clash.
"Get the hell up, all of you! The situation's not clear, stay alert."
Alex, the Iron Deacon of the Church of Steam, held a large-caliber flame essence handgun. The hardened veteran who had fought barbarians in the northern frontiers clenched a cigarette in his teeth, squinting as he cautiously peered outside while kicking a few subordinates who had collapsed gasping for breath.
His extensive battlefield experience immediately flagged the abnormality of the fanatics' sudden retreat.
"Alex, are you still alive?"
Maria's cold, ethereal voice carried from outside. The lady who never joked seemed to tease, but it was really to confirm identities.
"Alive and kicking, little lady!"
Hearing Maria's voice, the tough man gritted his teeth. This capable, elegant woman had left a deep impression on him, he'd even helped her with some documents once. But Alex never expected she'd be the one to rescue them.
"Up! Get the hell up, don't embarrass me!" The crude, swearing hardcase stuffed the handgun, which functioned as a hand cannon and performed like a blast gun into his belt. The motion made onlookers twitch, worried the unsecured named weapon might accidentally fire and kill him on the spot.
After confirming those inside would not attack again, Lady Maria stepped into the Armory with measured calm.
"He~tui!!"
The moment she entered, she saw the northern tough guy spitting on the floor. Maria's mouth twitched violently, clearly disturbed by Alex's uncivilized behavior.
