Chapter 162: Luck Wood?

Chapter 162: Luck Wood?

Hugo paced back and forth in his room, his feet tracing an invisible path across the floor as his mind raced.

Should he buy the auras first? Or spin the gift box wheel? His brain felt like it was about to overheat from all the debating.

"Alright, Hugo, think," he muttered, running his fingers through his hair. "Do I want guaranteed upgrades to boost my aura game now, or do I gamble everything on the wheel first?"

The answer hit him like a lightning bolt. Spin the wheel first! It was a no-brainer. He had a feeling—no, a certainty—that this was his luckiest hour of the day.

It was just that pressing hunch at the back of his mind, daring him to go to a nearby casino. He was sure he would make it big!

Plus, if he failed spectacularly, the guaranteed aura purchases would at least cheer him up. That logic was flawless, right? Right.

"Alright, the wheel it is," Hugo said with a nod, determination gleaming in his eyes. He clapped his hands together like a coach hyping up his team. "Let’s make this count."

Before he could start, though, Hugo decided to prepare the battlefield. He cleared his room with dramatic flair, tossing his chair aside like it had insulted his mother, pushing his desk into the corner with a grunt, and even folding his laundry for once.

The centre of his room was now a sacred space—ready for his ritual. And it was a ritual indeed.

Next, he reached under his bed and pulled out a small box filled with strips of what he proudly called "luck wood."

He’d bought them from an antique store down the street for a suspiciously cheap price.

According to the quirky shopkeeper, they were infused with the blessings of ancient monks. Or witches.

Or maybe it was just termite-ridden driftwood. Hugo couldn’t remember, but it looked magical enough.

It was sickly and bony and barely alive. Perfect Sorcerer instrument.

Using the strips, he painstakingly formed a sigil of luck in the middle of the floor—a design he’d found on some sketchy online forum that had glowing reviews like,

"Totally not a scam! Worked for me! Got a new job!" and "Definitely summoned good vibes, 10/10."

Hugo sat cross-legged in the middle of the sigil and closed his eyes. For a moment, he just breathed deeply, centring himself like a wise monk about to reach enlightenment.

Then his thoughts derailed.

’Alright, Goddess of Luck, listen up. You and I have been cool for a while now, haven’t we? I mean, I’ve always respected you. Never stepped on a crack, always picked up pennies, even the dirty ones. You owe me. You’re not gonna betray me now, right? We’re like... besties!’

A paperclip.

A plastic kazoo.

A coupon for cabbage.

And... a rock.

A rock? A rock?!

Hugo’s face darkened like a thundercloud. His hands clenched into fists, and his jaw tightened so much it might’ve cracked. Internally, he screamed:

’A ROCK?! I could’ve picked one off the street for free!’

His gaze fell on the luck wood sigil, and he glared at it with the fury of a man betrayed.

’That antique store owner lied to me! This isn’t luck wood—it’s bad juju wood!’ He briefly considered burning it, but then thought better of it.

"No, no. There’s still more chances. I must succeed," he said, taking a deep breath.

He stared at the screen with renewed determination. The battle wasn’t over yet. Not by a long shot.
