Chapter 137: Unfinished Business
Chapter 137: Unfinished Business
New York! The city of dreams! Or at least, that was one of its many epithets. Yes. The city's got like twelve of them. I checked.
It did make me wonder though. How is New York the city of dreams and the city that never sleeps at the same time? Didn't I need to sleep in order to dream?
Oh. Not all dreams take place when you're asleep. We've got the daydream after all.
Anyways, I grinned, enjoying the view of the city's skyline from the window of my private jet as we landed.
It is with great pleasure that I announce that Crownsborough is now stable. The whole Fiske thing had done some damage but as always, Elsa had managed to stay upon it, keeping it from spiraling out of control and at the same time, giving Jenny all the evidence she needed to get her mother on her side.
It really had been a good decision to trust Jenny to do things on her own. Due to this, Jasmine would be spending some well deserved time in jail, courtesy of Clarisse.
I'd been surprised when she'd called me and of course, I'd used the opportunity to propose a deal.
If I made sure to keep things quiet, she'd make sure that Jasmine served time in jail. And of course, a little extra something.
And I was here to use that little extra for some unfinished business. To meet and teach the one person who had managed to coast through all these with no consequences a lesson or two.
Charles Harrington.
I walked down the airstair, seeing Jenny already waiting just as she promised. She grinned at me, leaning against a Rolls-Royce Ghost at the private terminal.
I had to admit that she looked... well put together. Her purple dyed hair and purple pantsuit went together but that was not the biggest change in her. It was her posture. She stood with the kind of confidence that she'd once lacked before. The confidence of someone who had power and knew it.
I smiled at the sight. I guess being chairman really did suit her.
"You're late." She teased, pushing herself off the car as I approached.
"Private jets don't speed, Jenny." I shot back with a grin of my own. "But congratulations, Madam Chairman. You've earned it."
Her grin widened, a look of modesty so fake, some would call it a knockoff, pasted on her face. "Oh, it's nothing I couldn't handle."
"Wouldn't you like to know." I said in a mock pompous voice, tapping the side of my nose.
"I see." She nodded like she understood. "I don't know if I've told you this before but fuck you."
I laughed in response and the conversation drifted as we drove toward her family's estate. As we all know, time flies when you're having fun. Maybe that's why I felt that the ride ended too early.
We arrived at the Newton estate and Jenny led me in. After showing me around a bit, she handed me over to a butler who escorted me to Clarisse's private study.
"Ms. Newton will see you shortly." The butler said, leaving me in a corridor lined with different paintings that looked normal but I was sure was worth more than the car Jenny drove me in.
I didn't wait. I pushed the door open and entered to see Clarisse sitting behind her desk while writing something down on a book in front of her. At my entrance, she glanced up.
"Bold." She said, setting her pen down. "And disrespectful."
"The whole chairman thing is over." I grinned, taking a seat. "I don't have to step lightly to make Jenny appealing again."
"And what makes you think I won't just take back my seat if you keep acting like this?"
"Because you're reasonable." I answered. "And you know how valuable Jenny is." I shrugged. "Do whatever you want but it's your loss."
She leaned back in her chair. "I assume you're not just here to be disrespectful."
"Don't tell me you've forgotten about our deal, Clarisse." I copied her posture, also leaning back. "You gave your word to help me deal with Charles Harrington."
"And you're starting to make me regret it." She said.
"Please." I chuckled. "Don't try to act like this isn't beneficial for you. You get to set an example and show that no one crosses you and use your daughter as a pawn without consequences."
She stared at me for a second before a smile appeared on her face. "Very well, Nicholas." She said, picking her pen back up. "I'll go along with your plan, within reason."
"In the meantime, you're welcome to stay here. Choose any room you like."@@@@
