The diary was written by a person called Jakery. He was a rank 5 mage and the person in charge of the whole operation for the order in the magical kingdom of Gilthar. He was an extremely powerful mage even amongst the rank fives.

There Jakery mentioned how he had gotten a secret news that the magus opposing them had became aware of this location and was planning to take offensive action. So immediately he decided to leave this base. That was also the reason why he had hidden most of the important supplies in this secret room.
There was also a mention of the Downfall of Nature and Society in the diary. It turned out that this book was written by him and he was trying to turn it into a real magus artifact. Jakery himself was not too far away from reaching that rank, so he was planning to turn those books into a magus artifact at the same time when he would reach that rank.

So before he could leave this location, a magus attacked this place and all the people died who were inside the building, including Jakery. Rein could have dodged that attack but as he also needed to protect the two girls behind him, instead of dodging, he created a barrier in front of him to stop the attack.
The barrier was actually able to completely block the attack. The affinity of the beam was violet flame which was a decently strong affinity. But it was nothing compared to Rein's void. So in their clash, Rein's affinity had a clear advantage.
Seeing that it's attack was completely blocked, the bird strange beast puppet became mad and attacked Rein. It tried to pierce him with its beak and slashed at him with its claws. But Rein was able to not only block all the attacks, he was even able to counterattack with his physical body after using physical strengthening.
