Chapter 399 Story 399: The Final Stand

The walls shook violently as Zara sprinted through the collapsing chamber, smoke and debris filling the air. Behind her, the Core's destruction roared like a living beast, its fiery remnants splintering into waves of chaos. She barely registered the sound of the Warden's enraged screams fading into the devastation.

Her lungs burned, but she didn't stop. Zara burst through a metal door and into a long corridor just as the blast wave hit. She dove forward, the force of the explosion launching her down the hall. She crashed into the ground, sliding against the cold steel as rubble clattered behind her. Silence followed—brief, ominous silence.

Zara groaned and pushed herself up, her ears ringing. "Not dead yet," she muttered, staggering to her feet.

She wasn't safe. Not yet. The Core's detonation had triggered a chain reaction, destabilizing the entire facility. Red warning lights blinked wildly as sirens blared overhead. Zara's boots pounded against the metal floor as she made her way to the extraction point. The Warden's plans might be destroyed, but he wasn't gone. She knew better than to count him out.@@@@

The comm in her ear crackled to life. "Zara!" It was Reeve's voice, urgent and sharp. "You triggered the detonation? The whole damn mountain's coming down!"

"I noticed," she replied, dodging a collapsed beam. "Tell me you're ready to pull me out."

"We're circling the perimeter—there's a helipad on the surface. Get there now! You've got two minutes, tops."

Two minutes. Zara pushed harder, adrenaline fueling every step. She rounded a corner and froze.

The final stairwell loomed ahead, leading to the surface. Her legs burned as she climbed, the sound of collapsing steel echoing behind her. Sunlight—blinding, beautiful sunlight—streamed through the open hatch above.

Zara burst onto the surface, gasping for air. The mountain behind her was trembling, its heart giving way. A helicopter hovered nearby, its blades roaring like salvation itself. Reeve leaned out, shouting.

"Zara, move!"

Zara sprinted the last few steps, leaping into the open side of the chopper as Reeve pulled her in. They lifted off just as the mountain erupted in a fiery collapse.

Zara looked back, watching the facility disappear into smoke and ash.

"It's over," she whispered.

But deep down, she knew the final reckoning still awaited.

The end was only one step away.
