Chapter 409: Story 409: Whispers Beneath the Glow
The warmth of the glowing pool seeped into Rook’s muscles, unwinding knots of tension he hadn’t realized he was carrying. For a fleeting moment, the weight of the world lifted, replaced by an almost dreamlike serenity. Around him, the others had similarly succumbed to the healing aura of the bathhouse, their weariness dissolving in the soothing embrace of the water.@@@@
But Rook’s mind never rested entirely. Beneath the surface calm, a shadow lingered.
"Something’s off," he muttered under his breath. The subtle ripple he’d noticed earlier still gnawed at him. He opened his eyes and scanned the room. Ghost was perched on a stone bench at the edge of the pool, his arms still crossed, his sharp gaze fixed on the ornate ceiling. Shadow, meanwhile, was half-submerged, her head resting on the pool’s edge, a rare smile softening her usual sharp edges. Bulwark, eyes closed, seemed lost in a trance, his chest rising and falling with steady breaths.
Elysia stood near the archway, her presence both calming and enigmatic. She watched them with a quiet intensity, her hands folded in front of her. But every so often, her gaze flicked toward the water, just for an instant, as if she, too, was waiting for something.
"Hey," Rook called out, his voice breaking the tranquil silence. "This place—this... magic pool. What’s its story? Why’s it just sitting out here in the middle of nowhere?"
Elysia tilted her head, her serene expression unchanging. "It is not ’nowhere,’ Rook. The Sanctuary exists where it is needed. It has no fixed place, no fixed time. It appears only to those who have earned its respite."
Ghost rose to his feet, his hand instinctively going to the knife at his side. "Yeah. Like something’s watching."
Elysia stepped forward, her calmness now tinged with urgency. "You must remain still. The Sanctuary is sensing... something. A disturbance."
Rook’s instincts screamed at him to move, to act, but he forced himself to stay rooted. Beneath the water, the ripples returned, more pronounced now. The glow of the pool shifted, swirling as though something unseen was stirring deep below.

"Elysia," Rook said, his voice a low growl, "what’s down there?"
Her answer was a whisper. "The cost."
