Chapter 423 Story 423: The Forsaken Chapel
The team emerged from the swirling void, disoriented but alive. The damp chill of the tunnels had been replaced by the bitter wind of an open graveyard. They stood at the edge of a forgotten town, its crumbling tombstones and rusted iron gates shrouded in thick fog. Ahead, the towering silhouette of a decrepit chapel loomed over the ruins, its spire piercing the overcast sky like a warning.
"This place isn't on any map," Shadow muttered, scanning the area with her scope. "Looks like it hasn't been touched in decades."
"Or centuries," Ghost added, her voice trembling as she glanced at the twisted trees and decayed structures.
Rook took a step forward, his boots crunching on the moss-covered cobblestones. "Stay alert. Places like this don't just appear out of nowhere. Whatever's here—it's tied to what we're chasing."
The air grew heavier as they moved deeper into the graveyard. Shadows shifted in the fog, and the faint sound of a church bell echoed in the distance. Viper's hand tightened on her blades, her eyes darting to the dark corners where the mist seemed to move with purpose.
As they reached the chapel's entrance, the massive oak doors creaked open on their own, revealing a dimly lit interior. Rows of broken pews lined the nave, and the floor was littered with shattered stained glass. At the far end of the room, an altar stood draped in tattered cloth, its surface adorned with strange carvings that glowed faintly.@@@@
"This feels wrong," Viper whispered, her voice barely audible.
As the battle raged, Rook noticed something strange: the glow from the altar pulsed in time with the creatures' attacks, as if fueling them.
"We need to destroy that altar!" he shouted.
"On it!" Viper replied, breaking through the chaos to reach the far end of the room.
As she plunged her blade into the carvings, the glow flickered and died, and the creatures let out an anguished wail before collapsing into heaps of ash.
The silence that followed was deafening.
"What the hell was that?" Shadow asked, breathing heavily.
Rook stared at the now-dormant altar, his expression grim. "This isn't just a chapel. It's a gateway. And whatever's on the other side... it's waiting for us."
