Chapter 426 Story 426: The Cursed Threshold
The ominous door loomed before the team, its intricate carvings radiating an unsettling energy. Skulls adorned the archway, dangling like grotesque ornaments, their hollow eyes seeming to track the intruders. Torches on either side of the entrance flickered with unnatural flames, casting eerie shadows that danced across the ancient stonework.
"This is it," Shadow whispered, scanning the area with her rifle. "The source of all the corruption we've encountered so far."
Ghost crouched near the steps, examining the ground. "No footprints, no signs of anyone entering or leaving. Whatever's behind this door doesn't need to use it like we do."
Viper leaned against one of the wooden beams barring the door, running her fingers over the ancient symbols etched into the surface. "These marks... they're wards, but they're not meant to keep us out. They're meant to keep something in."
"Something powerful," Bulwark added, gripping his heavy weapon tightly. "We're walking straight into its lair."
Rook stepped forward, his voice steady despite the tension in the air. "We've faced worse. Whatever's inside, we're shutting it down for good. Shadow, Ghost, cover the perimeter. Viper and Bulwark, get ready to breach."
As the team prepared, a low, guttural hum began to emanate from the door. The runes glowed faintly, pulsating like a heartbeat. The torches flared violently, their flames turning a sickly green.
"That's not a good sign," Ghost muttered, her hand instinctively moving to her sidearm.
"We can't hold this position forever!" Bulwark shouted, reloading his weapon.
Rook glanced at the doorway, now fully open. Beyond it, a glowing altar stood at the center of the chamber, pulsating with dark energy. "The altar is its source of power! Viper, you're with me. Everyone else, cover us!"
Dodging swiping claws and shadowy tendrils, Rook and Viper sprinted into the chamber. The oppressive darkness seemed to sap their strength, but they pressed on, reaching the altar.
"Destroy it!" Rook yelled, tossing a grenade onto the glowing structure.

The explosion rocked the chamber, sending shockwaves through the air. The creature let out an unearthly wail, its form disintegrating into ash. The shadowy entities vanished, leaving the team in silence.
As the dust settled, the team regrouped outside the cursed doorway. The torches had extinguished, and the oppressive energy had lifted.
"This isn't over," Rook said, his voice grim. "Whatever this was, it's just a fragment of the real threat. We need to keep moving."
With weary determination, the team pressed on, leaving the cursed threshold behind.
