Chapter 432: Story 432: Prison
The team stepped cautiously into the new corridor, their footsteps echoing ominously. The air was damp and cold, carrying a faint metallic tang that hinted at rust—or perhaps blood. Lining both sides of the narrow passage were ancient iron-barred cells, their interiors shrouded in impenetrable darkness.
"This doesn’t look promising," Ghost muttered, his voice barely audible.
Rook scanned the area, his grip tightening on his weapon. "Stay close. Something’s off."
The flickering lights of their headlamps revealed cryptic carvings on the walls, their meanings lost to time. Shadow, ever the analyst, paused to examine one.
"These aren’t just decorations," she said, tracing her gloved fingers over the etchings. "They’re warnings."
"Great," Bulwark grunted. "Warnings about what?"
A low, guttural whisper answered him. It didn’t come from any one direction—it surrounded them, a chilling symphony of words in a language none of them understood.
"Eyes up!" Rook ordered, his rifle sweeping the corridor.
The team tightened their formation, nerves fraying as the whispers grew louder. Viper clutched the ancient tome, her eyes darting nervously from cell to cell.
"This place... it’s not just a dungeon," she said. "It’s a prison. And whatever’s locked in here isn’t human."
"Not helping," Ghost shot back, his suppressed pistol at the ready.

As they approached the door, the chains began to rattle violently, and the cells behind them burst open. Shadows poured forth, forming an army of nightmarish figures.
"Go, go, go!" Rook shouted.
Bulwark turned, unleashing a torrent of firepower to hold the shadows back. The others sprinted to the door, with Viper frantically working to decipher the runes.
"Whatever you’re doing, do it fast!" Ghost yelled, fending off a shadow with his combat knife.
"I’m trying!" Viper shouted. The tome glowed brighter as she chanted an incantation, the runes on the door responding with a brilliant flash.
The door groaned open, revealing a blinding light beyond.
"Move!" Rook ordered.
The team dove through the doorway, the shadows’ claws just inches away. The door slammed shut behind them, the whispers and growls fading into silence.
They found themselves in a massive chamber, its walls lined with glowing crystals and ancient machinery. At its center stood a massive, pulsing artifact—a device that seemed alive.
"What is this place?" Shadow asked, her voice filled with awe.
Rook’s expression hardened. "The heart of the prison. And I think we just stepped into something far worse."
