Chapter 445 Story 445: Chains of Memory

As the suffocating darkness swallowed the room, Rook felt the cold bite of the shackles around his wrists and ankles intensify. A faint light emanated from the runes on the walls, casting an eerie glow. The rest of the team could only watch helplessly, frozen in place as an unseen force pinned them to the walls.

"Commander!" Viper shouted, struggling against the invisible restraints.

Rook's voice was steady, though his face betrayed a hint of uncertainty. "Stay focused. I'll get through this."

The spectral entity materialized once more, its chains slithering like serpents. "Your trial begins now, mortal. The chains of despair will reach into your memories. Face your greatest failures, or be consumed by them."

The room shifted. The cold, damp cell dissolved into a desolate battlefield. Rook stood alone, the air thick with the stench of smoke and blood. Familiar faces appeared before him—his fallen comrades from a mission long past. The ghostly forms stared at him with hollow eyes, accusing and mournful.

"You left us," one of them rasped, a soldier whose uniform was scorched and tattered. "You abandoned us to die."

"You promised to be there," she said, her voice trembling. "But you chose the mission over us. You always did."

The chains loosened, falling from his wrists and ankles with a metallic clang. The entity's form began to dissolve, its voice fading. "You have passed. Your resolve is your strength. Go... but beware, mortal. The Labyrinth still hungers."

The team was released from their restraints as the door to the cell creaked open.

"Rook," Shadow said, her voice soft. "What happened in there?"

"Later," he replied, his gaze hard. "We've got a Labyrinth to escape."
