Chapter 464: Story 464: The Descent into Dark

The team stood at the edge of a vertical shaft, staring down into the abyss. A single rusted ladder descended into the darkness, its iron rungs slick with moisture. The air carried the faint metallic tang of old water and decay. Above, the chamber they had narrowly escaped was now sealed, leaving this ominous shaft as their only route forward.

"This just keeps getting better," Viper muttered, peering into the depths. "How far do you think it goes?"

Ghost tossed a glow stick down the shaft. The faint green light spiraled downward, illuminating the walls coated in algae and grime before vanishing into the void. A distant clink echoed faintly seconds later.

"Far enough," Ghost replied grimly. Read new adventures at novelhall.Côm

"We don’t have a choice," Rook said, securing his gear. "Shadow, you take point. Viper, follow her. I’ll be in the middle. Ghost and Bulwark, bring up the rear."

Shadow grabbed the first rung and began her descent, moving swiftly but cautiously. The ladder groaned under the weight of her tactical gear, but it held firm. One by one, the team followed her, their movements echoing through the shaft.

The deeper they went, the colder it became. The dim light from their headlamps barely reached the slick walls, which seemed to close in around them. The whispers from the catacombs above had faded, replaced by an unsettling silence broken only by the sound of their boots scraping against metal.

Then they saw it. A figure shrouded in rags, hunched over and dragging a staff along the ground. Its movements were unnatural, as if it were being controlled by invisible strings. It stopped abruptly and turned toward them, revealing a face half-covered in bone, its hollow eyes glowing with an unnatural light.

"Welcome," it rasped, its voice echoing unnaturally. "You seek the key, but the price is steep."

Rook stepped forward. "We’re not here to barter. Move, or we’ll make you move."

The figure cackled, its laugh reverberating through the shaft. "You misunderstand. The price is blood... yours or theirs."

At its words, the walls trembled, and figures began emerging from the green glow—twisted abominations with flesh melted into metal.

"Defensive positions!" Rook shouted.

The battle had begun, and the descent was far from over.
