Chapter 283: Confiscate
You Qi knelt on the ground. Slowly, his gaze moved to the lake. He frowned as if he couldn’t figure something out.
“Brother,” Shi Liaozhi said, “Share your thoughts. Perhaps we can help.” Chen Qiang and Qin Jian moved over. They surrounded the spot where the sedan chair stopped yesterday night. Soon, Chen Qiang’s eyes changed. Then, Qin Jian saw the problem as well. He suddenly knelt down and stared at a fixed spot.
“What... is that?”
“It... looks like some kind of footprint.” Shi Liaozhi’s tone was uncertain because the imprint was too strange. It was oval in shape and quite small. It was not an animal footprint. You Qi stood up and stomped around the imprint. He was large and muscular. He stomped heavily. However, he only managed to leave behind a clear footprint. The strange imprint was deeper than You Qi’s footprint.
A bad feeling rose in their hearts.
“There... there’s more over there!” Shi Liaozhi saw another imprint with his good eyesight. The other spot was obscured by other people’s footprints. Thankfully, the imprint was deep enough that it could still be seen. They followed the series of imprints and came to the lakeside. The last imprint was left in the mud.
You Qi blinked. The bad feeling in his heart became real. “Those imprints... started at the sedan chair, right?” You Qi’s throat trembled before he forced the words out.
The next second, someone realised what the sharp and small imprints were. The realisation spread like a disease. Everyone turned to look at where the sedan chair was the night before. Even Chen Qiang, who hid his emotions well, felt a chill run up his spine.
They were footprints left behind by ancient lady’s shoes. Since ladies from ancient China had foot-binding cultures, their shoes were also called three-inch lotuses. They checked the imprints and realised they were about three inches.
“The paper doll in the sedan chair also had its feet bound,” You Qi said. It was hard to imagine a large man could be this frightened. His lips trembled, “I saw it...”
The wind blew from the lake, and they all shook.
...
“A bit to the left.”
“Right.”
“More to the right.”
“What do you plan to do in the kitchen?” Xia Meng stared at him as if trying to see through his tricks.
“Of course, it’s to check for clues.” Jiang Cheng straightened his back and said, “Or do you think I’m going in there to shit?”
“Doctor,” Fatty looked awkward as he tried to persuade him. “I know you have a small heart, but please reconsider this. Think about the risk of being captured.” Fatty added as the scary face of the middle-aged woman appeared in his mind, “Be careful that they confiscate your criminal tool.”
Xia Meng cut in, “It’s no big deal.” She grinned, “You’ll get it back after you leave the nightmare.”
Jiang Cheng seemed to really consider it. Then, he shook his head, “No. I still have to go.” He pointed at Xia Meng, “You better pray that nothing happens to me.”
Xia Meng stared at him. Fatty suddenly hoped that he had a box of popcorn.
“You’re the one who will cry if it is confiscated,” Jiang Cheng told Xia Meng.
Xia Meng turned and left. She pulled Fatty with her.
Actually, Fatty didn’t want to leave the Doctor, but Jiang Cheng didn’t wait for him. He easily jumped over the wall. Fatty had no choice but to follow Xia Meng.
“Wang Fatty,” Xia Meng pulled Fatty to a corner. They didn’t chase after the little beggar. “Now we’re alone.”
Fatty swallowed nervously.
“I need you to tell me who Jiang Cheng is, what his job is and who he works for.” Xia Meng narrowed her eyes. “If you do that, I promise I’ll ensure your safety, and you don’t need to be his lackey anymore.” Xia Meng raised her hand and added formally, “I can swear on it if you don’t believe me.”
Xia Meng still had reservations about Jiang Cheng’s identity. Of course, she had done a background check on him, but the reports she got were unclear.... Like she was looking through a layer of mist.
Fatty thought about it and answered, “That’s fine. I can tell you everything, but will you believe me?”
