Chapter 1274 - 1249: Grievances and Feuds

Zhou Susu said, "Is Zhang Ruili your daughter?""Yes, that’s correct." Zhang Xia replied.

"I would like to invite you to the police station to understand some matters." Zhou Susu said.

She only mentioned understanding matters, without telling the old woman about Zhang Ruili’s murder.

The reason Zhou Susu did this was that she feared the old woman would be distressed upon hearing the news.

"No problem, Officer Zhou." Zhang Xia nodded and said.

At this moment, she was no longer conflicted internally and decided to reveal everything that had been pent up for a long time.

"Where do you live? Tell me, and I’ll come to you." Zhou Susu said.

"No need, Officer Zhou, I’ll go to the police station to find you." Zhang Xia refused.

Hearing the old woman say this, Zhou Susu gave her the address of the police station.

After about half an hour, there was a knock on the door.

Zhou Susu opened the door and saw an elderly woman with white hair standing in front of her.

"Who are you?" Zhou Susu asked the elderly woman.

"Officer Zhou, I’m Zhang Xia. We just spoke on the phone." Zhang Xia said with a smile.

Zhou Susu invited the elderly woman in, saying, "Hello, please come in and have a seat."

In fact, it couldn’t be blamed for Zhou Susu not recognizing Zhang Xia. Mainly, the elderly woman looked at least nearly seventy years old, drastically different from Zhang Xia’s age, appearing much older.

Zhou Susu served Zhang Xia a glass of water, inviting her to sit on the sofa.

Zhang Xia noticed there was another young person in the office, and she asked Zhou Susu, "Officer Zhou, who is this?"

"This is my colleague, Ye Chen. He just happens to have a case to handle." Zhou Susu said while making eyes at Ye Chen.

Understanding the signal, Ye Chen said, "Captain Zhou, I’ll get going. You two chat."

With that, Ye Chen turned and left the office, closing the door behind him.

He understood that with him there, Zhang Xia might not reveal everything, and he also had work to do.

Watching Ye Chen leave, Zhang Xia said, "Officer Zhou, what is it that you wanted to talk to me about?"

"Aunt Zhang, it’s like this. I wanted to talk to you about your daughter’s situation." Zhou Susu said to the elderly woman in front of her.

She truly didn’t know how to begin. It was exceedingly cruel for the elderly woman in front of her.

Nothing is more sorrowful than a parent having to bury their child.

Just as Zhou Susu was thinking about how to break the news to the elderly woman, Zhang Xia interrupted, "Officer Zhou, you’re here to tell me about my daughter and son-in-law being murdered half a month ago, right?"

Hearing the old woman’s words, Zhou Susu was surprised. So, she had known about her daughter and son-in-law’s murder all along. But why hadn’t she shown up?

Especially since Little Jing was still alive. If she knew, she would surely go to the police station for her granddaughter, but Zhang Xia hadn’t.

Zhang Xia could tell what Zhou Susu was thinking and sighed, saying, "Officer Zhou, you’re probably wondering why I haven’t shown up even though I knew about this."

Zhou Susu replied openly, "That’s right, Aunt Zhang. Your granddaughter is still alive. Why didn’t you take her in and care for her?"

"Officer Zhou, it’s not that I don’t want to. I just can’t face Little Jing. I’m terrified that she’ll remind me of her mom, my poor daughter." Zhang Xia said through tears.

"Aunt Zhang, I understand how you feel. But Little Jing, who can’t speak, was already quite pitiful. Now she’s lost her loving parents; it’s too cruel. If you take care of her, she’ll receive warmth and won’t feel as hopeless about life." Zhou Susu expressed her thoughts.

"Yes, Officer Zhou, I’ve thought it over now, and I’ve decided to take Little Jing home and take care of her, as a final act for that poor daughter." Zhang Xia said as she began to sob uncontrollably.

"Aunt Zhang, don’t be like this. The dead cannot be resurrected. Please control your grief." Zhou Susu advised.

Zhang Xia dabbed her tears with a tissue and said, "Don’t worry, Officer Zhou, I won’t fall. I still have Little Jing. If I fall, this child would truly be all alone."

Hearing this, Zhou Susu felt a bit relieved. She couldn’t help but acknowledge Zhang Xia’s resilience.

"Aunt Zhang, do you have another daughter named Zhang Rumei?" Zhou Susu asked.

"Yes, Officer Zhou, I have two daughters, one named Rumei and the other Ruili. My husband left us before the children were one year old. Since then, the three of us have depended on each other. I gave both daughters my surname, Zhang." Zhang Xia said slowly.

Zhou Susu knew Zhang Xia had more to say, so she didn’t interrupt and continued to listen.

"Officer Zhou, you know, even though life was hard, the three of us felt very happy. But that happiness disappeared when the sisters reached marriage age. Ruili and Rumei had a very close relationship, but a man came between them, making the younger sister resent her older sister. Despite my repeated attempts to persuade them, Rumei’s mindset couldn’t be changed." Zhang Xia continued.

"Aunt Zhang, do you mean the older sister took the younger sister’s husband?" Zhou Susu asked.

"No, Officer Zhou, it’s not as you say. Ruili didn’t take her sister’s man. Instead, Rumei fell in love with wealth and married a rich man, abandoning the man who once deeply loved her, who was also Little Jing’s father. After Ruili married this man, the two of them worked hard to start a company, had Little Jing, and their lives became increasingly happy."

"On the other hand, the younger sister’s life was far from happy. The rich man was initially kind but later turned abusive, cheating on her and frequently committing domestic violence, leaving her unable to have children. Since then, Rumei has harbored resentment towards her sister, blaming everything on her and growing envious of her happiness, to the point of murder."

Hearing Zhang Xia’s account, Zhou Susu was stunned, asking, "Aunt Zhang, you knew everything all along."

"Yes, that’s right. I thought Rumei was just speaking in anger. I never expected she would cruelly murder her sister. My poor Rumei, so kind-hearted and always caring for her sister, ended up in this situation." Zhang Xia cried out in anguish.

"Aunt Zhang, please take care of yourself." Zhou Susu quickly advised.

"Officer Zhou, I know my younger daughter Zhang Rumei has been arrested by you. She brought this upon herself. Everyone must pay for their wrongdoing." Zhang Xia said expressionlessly.
