Foundation of Smoke and Steel

Chapter 155

Chapter 155

DanielIn the aftermath of the battle, Daniel found himself standing still while the world continued to move around him.

Smoke drifted through the shattered approach to Crescent Hyr. The clang of steel faded into the groans of the wounded and the shouted orders of officers reestablishing lines. Spells were still being cast, but now they were careful ones, designed for stabilization, reinforcement, and healing. The kind of magic that came after survival, not during it.

And through it all, the plan had worked.

That was the part his mind kept circling back to.

It should not have worked; at least not this well. It was too clean.

They had been outnumbered, out-positioned, and operating on incomplete information. He had made assumptions under pressure and trusted his brothers-in-law and retainers—the former who had never fought a battle together and the latter who were untested. It had worked flawlessly. He had gambled that coordination would matter more than raw power, that structure could outlast fury, and that one precisely timed intervention could collapse an entire enemy formation.

And somehow, against every sensible instinct he had ever developed, it had all held together.

Daniel let out a slow breath he had not realized he was holding.

This was the dangerous part. Not the fighting. Not the orcs or the Murai or the demons. It was the moment after, when success tried to convince you it was inevitable. When your brain started rewriting risk into brilliance and luck into proof.

He refused to let himself do that.

People had almost died. Some had. Marissa was still bleeding. Vivian had been thrown hard enough that he would not be surprised if something was broken. Nathan was laughing like an idiot because that was how he coped, and the people of this fortress were probably traumatized. He would have to get resources for them. They had protected the princess, his sisters, and his wife. He would have to come up with some kind of reward.

Daniel closed his eyes briefly.

he told himself.

Still, as he looked out over the fortress, over the defenders regrouping and the breach holding, he allowed himself one quiet, private thought.

He was thankful everyone was alive.

But they were not out of the woods yet.

Daniel looked over at Vivian, and for some reason seeing his wife safe again grounded him more than he expected. He wasn’t entirely sure who the red-haired woman was, but she had to be one of the Four Beauties. She was striking in a way that demanded attention: red hair, full hips, generous curves, clothes torn and scorched from battle, and absolutely no concern that she was half past indecent. She also kept looking at him like she was considering whether to eat him, so there was that.

Introductions would have to wait.

As they prepared to move back toward the fortress, Daniel found himself walking alongside the red-haired woman and Nathan. Nathan’s thoughts were so obvious he might as well have been wearing a billboard that read I LIKE HER.

They reached the opening of Crescent Hyr just as Gavin approached, a grin plastered across his face.

“Not a bad little battle,” Gavin said, with Lucas just behind him.

“No,” Daniel agreed, returning the grin. “It wasn’t.”

Daniel tilted his head. “Was that a modification of the burst spell we’ve been working on? It hit harder than it did during practice.”

Gavin nodded. “I was thinking about what you said. We talked about parameters, and I tried streamlining the processing array by adjusting intent instead of reworking the entire array and activation sequence. It gave me more flexibility. I had to dial back raw power a bit, but the overall effect was stronger.”

Daniel nodded approvingly. “Pretty impressive, Young Master Li. We’ll make a scholar out of you yet.”

Gavin chuckled. “Honestly? That doesn’t sound so bad.”

That was when Daniel noticed Vivian approaching.

Gavin gave his sibling a stern look.

“Little sister,” he said, keeping his tone light. “We need to talk.”

Vivian stopped a few paces away and looked… uncomfortable. Uncharacteristically so.

Ethan said.

Daniel replied.

Ethan said.

Daniel considered that.

Ethan paused.

Daniel kept his face carefully neutral.

Daniel thought back.

Ethan replied.

Daniel shot back.

Ethan said.

Ethan protested.

Daniel thought, exasperated.

Daniel replied deadpan.

There was a mental shrug.

Daniel exhaled.

Ethan asked.

Daniel thought.

Ethan shrugged again.

Daniel paused.

Daniel grinned despite himself, but his attention snapped back to the present as he spotted the twins.

The feeling hit him harder than he expected. He didn’t know them well, not really, but the bond was there all the same. Seeing them safe sent a surge of relief straight through his chest.

They ran to him and threw their arms around him.

“Brother! You came for us. We’re so happy to see you!”

He hugged them tightly. “I am glad that you are okay. You have Ryan to thank for the message. I had no idea you were gone. You two are in so much trouble. I am furious that you left the academy without telling anyone. If you weren’t almost eighteen, I’d take you both over my knee and ground you for a year.”

They both had the decency to look ashamed. He ignored the fact that they probably didn’t know what he meant by ground.

Daniel sighed, then smiled despite himself. “That said, I saw the mana disruptor device. Vivian threw it as she started her attack. I honestly didn’t think you’d be able to put it into practice. As expected of my little sisters. Well done.”

Both twins lit up at the praise.

“Yeah,” one of them admitted, “but it really messed up Emily’s arm.”

Daniel’s gaze snapped to Emily. Only then did he notice the darkness along her arm, like a deep bruise that didn’t quite behave like one.

“That’s not good,” he said quietly. “I’ll take a look.”

He hugged them again, more gently this time. “You are never to do that again. Do you understand me? You don’t disappear without telling me. I can’t protect you if I don’t know where you are.”

They pulled back, frowning. “Brother, it’s not your job to protect us.”

“Like hell it isn’t,” Daniel said flatly. “You’re my sisters. Even if your were to get married, have babies and are protected by the Imperial Family themselves. You will ALWAYS be my protection. You are MY sisters and the apple of our parents eye. I will not let anythign happen to you. Is that clear?”

My sisters nodded their faces going a bit pink.

"You're going to need to give me a better explanation--"

A tired but composed voice cut in.

“Actually you have me to blame for all this. It was my decision.”

Daniel turned.

Princess Sophie Virelyn stepped forward, exhaustion etched into her posture. And then she did the unthinkable.

She bowed.

Daniel immediately returned it and his face softened slightly. “Your Highness.”

“I’m relieved to see you and we owe you for our lives,” she said. “And that you require an explanation.”

Daniel met her gaze, calm but unmistakably firm. “You took my wife, my sisters, and their friend halfway across the Empire, walked them into a battlefield, and didn’t tell anyone what was happening. You did so without adequate protection when you have all the resources in the world. With all due respect, Princess, you’d better have a very good reason or we are going to have a problem. Because from where I am standing this is the some of the dumbest shit I have ever seen. Again with all due respect.”

Sophie’s eyes widened slightly, then she flushed. “I do. Master Ethan. I promise.”

She straightened. “But it will have to wait. We need to prepare. There’s another army coming.”

She paused. “Once they are delt with. I’ll explain everything; I promise.”

Daniel nodded once. “Then let’s get to work.”
