Foundation of Smoke and Steel

Chapter 188

Chapter 188

DanielThey did not leave the reception hall immediately.

The shift happened gradually, the kind of transition that only became obvious once it had already taken place. Servants moved first, quiet and efficient, carrying word ahead that the arrivals were complete and that the meeting would move outside. Guards adjusted their positions without being told, and the subtle hum of mana engines above the fortress deepened as more aerial traffic settled into controlled descent patterns.

Daniel felt it before he saw it.

The scale of what he had triggered.

He fell into step beside Vivian as they moved toward the outer gates, the rest of the group forming naturally around them without anyone needing to call it out. Sophie walked just ahead, her posture restored to its usual composure, though there was still something tight in the way she held her shoulders. Anmei remained close enough to be part of the core group, her attention drifting between people, space, and the unfolding situation with open curiosity.

The doors opened onto the forward approach of Crescent Hyr.

The difference was immediate.

The open ground beyond the fortress had transformed into something far more structured than it had been in the days prior. The Serrans had established a visible perimeter, their formation spaced with deliberate care so that they could reinforce one another without appearing like a wall. Shields were grounded. Weapons were present but not raised. The message was clear: they take care of their own.

Daniel took it in as he stepped forward. Gavin had done exactly what he said he would do.

Strength, without aggression. Prepared, without provocation.

Beyond that line, the landing fields were active.

Flying carriages descended in controlled intervals, each arrival distinct in design and insignia. Some bore the clean lines of Imperial construction. Others carried regional markings, noble crests, or private affiliations that spoke more to wealth and influence than formal authority. Ground transports had already begun to cluster along the outer edges, their occupants filtering inward in measured waves.

It was no longer a gathering.

It was an assembly.

Daniel felt Vivian shift beside him, just slightly, her presence aligning with his without drawing attention to the movement.

"There are a lot more people here than I was anticipating," he said quietly.

"The Empire is getting ready to meet with one of the most hostile countries or races in the known world," Vivian replied. "You should have known that everyone with any sort of political savvy was going to want to come here. You simply gave them a reason to arrive."

That tracked. But it also created a problem. More people meant more need for vigilance and security. It also meant he had far less control over the situation than he would have preferred.

Before he could get too far in his head, one of the carriages touched down. A big, black one. He recognized the insignia.

It came from the Lins. Marissa's mother and father were here.

Lady Lin stepped forward before the attendants had fully cleared the landing platform, her pace controlled only by necessity. She did not rush, but her patience seemed manufactured, like she was trying to come across more controlled than she actually was. Lord Lin followed just behind her, his restraint more visible but no less deliberate.

Daniel recognized the look immediately. Concern held in place by discipline.

Vivian moved to meet them, her posture shifting just enough to acknowledge their position while maintaining her own.

"Lady Lin. Lord Lin," she said.

Lady Lin barely acknowledged the greeting.

"Where is she?" she asked. "Where is my daughter?"

A case of content theft: this narrative is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.

The question carried weight without needing force. Lady Lin was here to see her daughter Marissa, and no one was going to stand in her way.

"She is inside," Vivian replied. "She is being attended."

Lady Lin nodded once, but the motion did nothing to ease the tension in her expression.

Margaret Zhou stepped forward before she could move past them.

"She's stable," she said as she reached for Lady Lin's hand. "For now. I'm very glad to see you, Salli. Would you like to go and see her now? I know that you've had a long journey. Would you like to try to freshen up before we go to the hospital building?"

Salli Lin shook her head as she squeezed the hands of Margaret Zhou, one of her oldest friends.

"Actually, I have someone coming in to help." She looked over at Vivian and then Anmei. "Quite honestly, I believe, Lady Vivian, that it's somebody you actually know."

Daniel felt the ambient mana pull inward, settling in a way that did not match the previous arrivals.

It was then that there was a whoosh of air and a strong pull of mana. Daniel looked up to see one of the biggest birds he had ever seen. If it didn't have feathers, more like a condor, you would have thought it was a pterodactyl. It wasn't. It literally looked like a giant falcon, complete with white feathers and black eyes.

Ethan spoke to him.

Daniel thought internally.

Ethan responded.

Daniel ignored him and turned toward the massive bird.

He was just about to say something smart when a woman slid down from it.

Daniel did not know her name, and honestly, that didn't seem to matter. He did not need to understand what he was looking at.

She moved with a kind of stillness that seemed to mellow the chaos around her. Her hair was white, her eyes were dark, and her lips were painted red. Her robes fell in layered tones of earth and muted gold, the fabric holding its shape in a way that suggested weight without burden. Nothing about her presence pushed outward. It was more like a rift in the familiar, the way a single red cloud disturbs a sky of blue.

Daniel felt her presence settle against his senses immediately. Different than anything else had felt. He stared at her. He couldn't help himself.

"Another one," he said quietly.

Anmei leaned closer, her voice lowering just enough to keep the exchange between them.

"The Poet of Earth," she said. "Yu Meishan. Spirit Cultivator. She is third of the Four Great Beauties of the Empire."

Daniel's attention sharpened. "What's a spirit cultivator?"

Anmei's smile shifted, slower now, becoming mischievous.

"I would be very happy to explain that," she said. "But what are you going to give me in return?"

She looked at him with hungry eyes.

Vivian moved before the moment could stretch, just enough to take control of the space between them, literally bumping Anmei to the side with her hip.

"Spirit cultivators contract with beings from the spirit world," she said, her tone even and precise. "Practitioners draw from entities or concepts through those contracts. They're quite a bit more limited than the original spirit, but practitioners who have good relationships with their spirit can be incredibly powerful."

Daniel glanced at her. "Kind of like the Murai?"

"Yes and no. It's more complicated than that. The Murai go through an external validation, with a sort of subjugation of power. Their sword spirit is a spirit, but I've never actually heard of swords that have inherent spirits. I think it's manufactured."

Ethan raised an eyebrow.

"What she means," said a soft, melodic voice, "is that sword spirits are developed from Aether, mana, and intent. And through a ritual that the Murai jealously guard, they create something akin to a soul."

Ethan let out a whistle.

The thought process died in Daniel's head as Yu Meishan neared. He didn't know anything about the woman, but Yu Meishan was another one of the Four Beauties, with good reason.

Ethan snorted.

Daniel turned and looked at her. "I'm Ethan Zhou, Vivian Li's husband, married into the Li family. It's nice to meet you, my lady."

Yu Meishan was a delicate little thing with bright green eyes and an equally warm aura. Daniel could feel her mana from here, but it was clearly mixed with something that wasn't mana. He could only assume it was the spirit juice that a contract with a spirit gave her.

"Master Zhou, the man of the hour. It's very much an honor to meet you. I've been looking forward to it."

Daniel was taken aback by that. "You're going to have to forgive me, Lady Yu. I am not very familiar with you. But I'm glad that I get to make your acquaintance."

The woman who looked like a delicate doll gave him a soft smile. "And yet I know everything about you, Master Zhou. You're part of the reason I'm here.”

Ethan snorted.
